STEREOTYPES

In the United States and Canada, a jock is a stereotype of an athlete, or someone who is primarily interested in sports and sports culture, and does not take much interest in intellectual activity.

MOTIVATION

Fear of failure. Winning. Fame. A big contract. Any contract. A way out. Championship trophies. Love of the game. Awards. Accolades. Teammates.  All of these and more are the things that motivate athletes these days. Let’s be honest, they have always been the things that motivate athletes.

Danell Leyva is a three-time Olympic medalist and has been acting since his retirement in 2016  Danell was born in Cardenas, Cuba on October 30th, 1991. After having severe asthma as a baby, his mother, Maria Gonzalez, fled from Cuba to find a better life for her children, Danell and his sister, Dayanis Mesa.  After a 20-year long career in gymnastics that saw Danell Johan Leyva win three Olympic medals, two silver medals during the 2016 Rio Olympics on Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar, and one bronze in the All-Around at the 2012 London Olympics, Danell moved to Los Angeles to pursue his passion in entertainment.

In the first year that women’s boxing was an Olympic event, Marlen Esparza earned a bronze medal for the U.S. Esparza’s performance at the Olympics earned her lucrative sponsorship deals with Cover Girl, Coca-Cola and McDonalds, cementing her position as an important ambassador for the Hispanic business community. Esparza was the subject of Soledad O'Brien's 2011 CNN documentary In Her Corner: Latino in America 2.  In December 2016 she signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions, and she made her pro debut on ESPN's March 23, 2017 opening card of a multi-year deal with Golden Boy

Leonel "Leo" Manzano Born in Mexico/Grew up in Texas

Leonel "Leo" Manzano (born September 12, 1984) is a retired Mexican-American middle-distance track and field athlete specializing in the 1500 m and mile. He was a silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Manzano is known for finishing his races with a strong finishing kick In 2015 Leonel Manzano placed 3rd at 1500 meters at the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and 10th in 2015 World Championships in Athletics – Men's 1500 metres.

 Leonel Manzano placed 4th at 1500 meters at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials (track and field). Manzano is a Coca-Cola spokesperson.

Though he was born in Mexico, Fernando Valenzuela is one of the most important sports figures to the Hispanic-American community. Valenzuela had one of the most successful rookie years in baseball history (1981), winning the NL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards, as well as leading the Dodgers to a World Series win. Valenzuela was instrumental in healing the wound between the Dodgers and the Mexican-American community in Los Angeles caused by the the bulldozing of Chavez Ravine to build Dodger Stadium.
